Most of these narcotic analgesics are effective at relieving pain; however, they have a tendency to cause addiction, dependence, and tolerance.

Pain is an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage and is the main reason a patient seeks medical care.  It is a symptom which may either be acute or chronic in nature. Acute pain often has a clear source. Chronic pain is more persistent, lasting months or years, and it may or may not have an obvious source. The most common pain remedy is Acetaminophen/hydrocodone and is used in the treatment of back pain; pain; rheumatoid arthritis; cough; and many others.
