What is lorazepam?

Lorazepam belongs to the drug class benzodiazepines which act on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. It specifically affects chemicals in the brain that may be unbalanced in people with anxiety.

Some people taking the medicine don’t experience any serious side effects, but when they do, stop the medication and seek immediate help in case these symptoms occur: severe drowsiness, thoughts of suicide or hurting yourself, unusual changes in mood or behavior, confusion, aggression, hallucinations, worsened sleep problems, sudden restless feeling or excitement, muscle weakness, drooping eyelids, trouble swallowing, vision changes or upper stomach pain, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Allergic reactions to the drug are rare but watch out for these signs and call your doctor immediately: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

What are things to consider when taking lorazepam?
